Ask a business owner how many keys open their front door and most cannot answer. Keys get handed out as staff arrive, they rarely come back when staff leave, and after a few years there is no honest list.
Nothing about that shows up until something goes missing and there is no sign of forced entry, at which point it is an insurance argument as much as a security one.
The fix is not new doors. It is one rekey to reset who holds what, and then a system that makes the next five years traceable. Both are cheaper than people assume.
A master key system means each person carries one key that opens exactly the doors they need, while a manager's key opens everything. A cleaner's key opens the front and the storeroom; the owner's key opens all of it. Nobody carries a bunch.
A restricted key system is about duplication. The key blanks are patented and controlled, so nobody can walk into a shopping centre and have a copy cut off the record. Duplicates only happen with your written authorisation.
What drives the price of either is the number of doors and the number of access levels, not the building. That is why a system is quoted per site rather than off a price list. Six doors on two levels of access is a different job from twenty doors on five.

Two things worth doing the arithmetic on. First, rekeying is per lock, so a rekey across eight doors is eight times the line above, not one flat fee. Anyone quoting a single small number for a whole premises is either misunderstanding you or cutting corners. Second, a shopfront that cannot lock at closing time is an after-hours call, and after-hours pricing in South Africa splits into a surcharge model and a flat emergency tariff. Ask which one you are being quoted.
Retail and light industrial hardware fails differently from house locks. Roller shutter locks fill with street grit and seize. If a lock is already failing, deal with it as a booked daytime job. The same fault at 07:30 on a Saturday, with the shop unable to open, costs you the repair plus the trading.
